Here is the door we will be trimming out. This is a stock door from your local box store. Most exterior doors are the same in dimensions. So lets get started.

Always start with the side pieces first because the top piece will overlap the sides preventing water from leaking behind them.

The first thing we are going to do is measure the height of the side piece from the top of the brick mold to the very bottom of the brick mold as seen in the picture to the right.

Remember measure twice and cut once.

After cutting the piece to the length you can now go ahead and notch it out for the thresh hold. Take your time with part because you do not get a second chance if you cut it wrong. You can always cut more off but you can never add more on. You can always caulk the bottom so don't try to be too perfect.

After you have notched it out, it should look something like the example to the right. Note: You can not fully put the piece in until you notch out the top.

Notching out the top can be kind of difficult but with some patience it shouldn't be a problem .I always leave a bit extra above the angle to allow the top piece to over lap. Once that is done fit the piece in and repeat for the other side.

After the sides are done its time to put the finial piece in place. The first thing you need to do is measure the width you need from edge to edge. Once you cut your piece to length you can start by notching it out like in the picture to the right.

Your next step is to cut your angel. I usually cut it on less then a 45 degree angle so that it over laps the side piece by plenty. By doing that the lines don't match up perfect so cut it to your likings. Remember that it must over lap the side piece other wise water will get behind it and we know water and wood are not a good thing.

Well this is the door completely finished. Believe me it looks much nicer in person. I hope this has helped out but the best way to learn something like this is by trying out your self. Always take your time and I am sure it will turn out just fine. If you have any questions please feel free to contact us here.

Thanks
